A year after the war with Mariemaia, the
pilots are called in by Une because of a disturbing discovery
- the Scientists have again been playing god by experimenting
with children - in other words, genetic engineering. The
remaining live experiments are taken in by the pilots,
and roughly 15 years later is when the main of this story
takes place. Julie, the adopted daughter of Duo and
Heero, is 15 years old and doing a report on the Gundam
Pilots, of whom there is almost no information. She
has no idea that her parents or "uncles" are said pilots,
or that she was a genetic experiment. She is an extremely intelligent
young woman, however, and is starting to dig up material
for her report that intrigues and confounds her. As
the story progresses, we learn more about what exactly
the scientists did to her and the other children.
Don't let the beginning fool you - this
POV is not in the least bit childish, even though
Julie may giggle and call Duo "daddy". The story
is extremely well written, and Marika creates original
information regarding the background of the war that is
very interesting.
Be patient, some of the parts are long
and may take time to load.
There is a side fic to this, a Katie POV: "Me
Myself and the Whole Damned World"

The
Whispers Series - added 18-jan-2004
The Quick - a series of stories focusing on Heero and
Duo and their growing relationship.
The Dirty - I think this is the first characterization
of Heero I've ever seen where his thought processes are
very much computer oriented, and by that I mean very strict,
very controlled, very "does not compute", and
yet he's still very obviously human. Most similar characterizations
tend to make him a stone bastard, someone who shuns all
fellow humans and would sooner rip off your head than look
at you. Not here. Yes, he tends to keep away from the others
some, but there's a reason for it, and when he does interact
with people, he's not unnecessarily nasty or abrupt. He's
willing to work with and learn from them, and so long as
their roles in the war aren't compromised, become friendly
with them.
There is a major lack of fanon in Whispers. While Duo
jokes around, there's no doubt he's a highly intelligent
person who's more than qualified for the position of a
gundam pilot. Quatre's a strong young man who, while still
feeling things strongly, is a capable warrior who won't
let people walk all over him. And the lack of fanon continues
with Trowa and Wufei - they have wonderful characterizations.
The last arc in this series is very humourous, and Maldoror
does a very good job of weaving a plot about misunderstandings
and miscommunication without going overboard with the pilots'
reactions.

Quatre, disillusioned by his current life
and unhappy with his past, contemplates suicide. Trowa
steps in to talk him out of it.
Trowa is quite dark and sarcastic in here,
but it's just what is needed in the situation he's in. He
also finds a good way of keeping Quatre from doing the
deed. Quatre is also portrayed a bit differently
- he's a brat, but that's part of the depression. There's
no wishy-washy Quatre here.
Very well written, not your typical almost-suicide
type fic.

What happens when Duo gets philosophical
about snowflakes and initiates a conversation with Heero. What
follows is a deep conversation on the meaning of life,
their role in it, and a glance into their friendship that
I think leads to some surprises for both of them.
Very sweet. I like seeing Duo portrayed
as a thinker for once instead of a "bouncy blond" stereotype,
as the author puts it. Heero, also, is portrayed
a bit differently - no angry, angsty soldier here, but
a quiet, intelligent boy whose personality and emotions
run deeper than most think. There is a sequel to
this called "Visible
Words".

" Break" and
its sequel " Torn" - added
20-nov-2001
Link is to author's page, as this fic
is divided into several parts. I hesitate to give
full warnings to those that like to be surprised, as part
of the mystery of this story is the "not knowing". This
is the fic that nearly killed me - it's horribly sad, full
of betrayal, pilots going insane, apparently bastardized
Heeros. But it's beautifully written and really pulls
you in.
Duo is captured by Oz while drawing the
forces away from Howard's retreating group. Heero,
who is very close to being a King in this AU, has a decision
to make - does he go after his love, thereby sacrificing
his troops to save just one man, or does he leave Duo and
keep his men's faith? The choice he makes will affect
them all in ways none of them could have possibly foreseen.

"Set
in Stone" - added 18 January 2003
"Set in Stone" is one of those rare fics
that focuses on building relationships between the pilots
without focusing on sexual elements - and I can't stress
just how much I enjoy that fact. There are pairings
in the fic, but there's no sexual focus, really. The story's
more about character, love, and friendship than gratuitous
hanky-panky. It's a wonderful thing.
During a mission gone terribly wrong,
Heero is severely injured and the pilots are unable to
find assistance. While working on the situation, they discover
just how close they've become, and just how far they'll
go to help someone who's become much more than just a comrade-at-arms.
This is a Heero/Duo focused story. The
others, as well as Noin and Sally, are present, and play
vital roles in the plot, but the main of the story is the
blooming feelings between those two. Heero isn't quite
the stone cold bastard he's usually portrayed as, nor is
Duo The Fool. They're both cunning boy soldiers learning
about themselves, what it means to be part of a group,
and what it means to love another.
Note: The fic is long, and I've chosen
to keep it on one page. Go get a snack while it loads.

"Prepare
to be Moved" - added 27-july-2002
You know what I think I really liked about
this? The interaction between the group - they were very real in
the sense that they acted like they really were teenagers.
Smarter than average teenagers with some rather bad history,
yes, but the teenage-type comments were there. There was
lots of snappy retorts and such, and I love that.
This is an after-war fic. Duo, Heero,
Trowa and Quatre have decided to attend St. Gabriel's.
Wufei has joined Preventers. This is a bit AU in that Hilde
was never part of the war effort - they meet her at school
where she becomes fast friends with the guys, but especially
Duo. When Heero starts acting out of sorts, Duo starts
to suspect that he might be jealous.
There is quite a bit of angst in here,
with a section or two devoted to some 3x4 arguing, but
really, I just loved the interaction between Heero and
Duo, and how sweet they are, when they aren't fighting.
The fighting is the teenage type, not the bloody, war mongering
type, so it's not too bad if you don't feel up to any angsty
stuff.
I've had this rec written for a while,
I was holding off on posting it because the author had
said something about a sequel. I haven't seen her posting
in months, though, so I don't know if that'll ever happen.
The fic doesn't need a sequel, so don't be afraid to read.
Parts: 15
If Ms. Cio Cio San sees this and would
like the story removed, please let me know and I will
remove it ASAP.
