This was just...sweet. Heero's monologue on Duo, how other
people view Duo, and how people view him in comparison
to Duo. He's a bit sulky, which some people may find OOC,
but he is a 15 year old boy - he's allowed a bad
day every now and then.

"ANATEXIS" - added
20-june-2002
This fic is a "what if" scenario. What
if Mariemaia had won the war? What if the pilots and their
companions and been spread far and wide after their loss
- some lost to death, some to prison, and some to their
own despair? Now suppose, through strange twists of fate,
careful planning and carelessness on the part of Mariemaia's
people, things start moving towards the beginning of an
uprising to end all uprisings? That's "ANATEXIS".
As I write this, I am at part 11 and I
keep repeating "Oh my god!" and waving my hands about,
caught up in the suspense and the tragedy that fate has
brought to the pilots. The phrase continues into chapters
12 and 13, where I am now pounding on my computer desk
- the suspense is killing me, and I am feeling the
emotional pain of everyone involved. My stomach is twisted
in fear for them, and in sorrow for those who look like
they aren't going to see the end of this story.
A final "OH MY FREAKIN' GOD!!!" and I've
reached the end of chapter 14. I'm damn close to tears,
and I think I'm going to need some tums before I turn this
off and turn in for the night. I've got the epilogue to
go - they'll determine whether the tears fall or not.
This is no typical gundam war fic. It
is more "adult" than most I've read, and in my opinion
paints a much more honest view of war. So many very unpleasant
things take place here (though not in the sense that it's "graphic" -
it's not). It's more along the lines of old friends that
have become bitter, bitter enemies, people manipulating
other people, and horrid, senseless death. In other words....war.
There is no humor here, no prattling Duo, no silent and
solitary Heero, no misogynistic Wufei, kind and gentle
Quatre or quiet and enigmatic Trowa. In other words, each
has been brutally shaped by the path the war took, and
you'll find no fanon stereotypes here.
As for the epilogues...if you need a lift
after reading this, go with the second epilogue. It's much
lighter in tone than the story and has some nice, if somewhat
melancholy warm fuzzies - just what I needed before I finally
head off to bed. Besides those tums.
Alexe is also an amazingly gifted artist.

Heero and Relena married and trying to
have children. This is a well-written, true-to-life
fic regarding pregnancy, miscarriage and the act of giving
birth. There is also humor involved - some of Heero's
thoughts as Relena's in labor are hilarious - and I don't
doubt something other men in his position have thought
as well. Very brief sub-plot of people trying to
remove Relena from office because she's pregnant and not
capable of doing her job. This is a side story to
a fic called "Eye Wall", but can stand alone as well.

"A
Darkening Dawn" - added 12-july-2002
This is actually a what-if scenario, and
something AL has thoughts of expanding upon once she gets
the time. In "A Darkening Dawn", things don't go as planned
after EW. The government's been deposed, and Relena and
Heero are on the run, trying to find their way to their
scattered friends.
At the beginning, there is no "relationship" between
them. In the past, there had been the option - Heero and
said to Relena that he could be her bodyguard or her lover...not
both. Despite loving Heero desperately, Relena chose bodyguard,
and that was the extend of their relationship, though they
did remain close. As events take place in this fic, though,
the line between bodyguard and something more is going
to be crossed.
Despite what the title sounds like, this isn't all
that dark. I love Relena in here; she's got a sense
of humour, she's capable when they get into tight spots,
and she's picked up some survival pointers from Duo. The
lemon is very realistic as well - get 2 virgins together
and things are not going to be all roses and sweet
music - there's going to be some bumps in the road *grin*.
I, personally, would really like to see Heero's ideas on
improving a certain piece of female clothing..

This starts out in a classroom in AC 206,
the teenagers are being taught about the great war hero
Heero Yuy. What's being taught in the classrooms
aren't always the way things really were. This deals
with what happens when a trip to Heero's grave is interrupted
by another pilot who sets them all straight on the real
facts. Very short, but good nonetheless
I liked this first because it was well
written, and second because I don't doubt this actually
occurs in our schools. The truth is often more than
what people want to believe
This is a sequel to a story called "High
Hopes," which can be found on Anria's webpage. "Discussing.." is
perfectly capable of standing on its own, however.

"Quote
Normal" - added 31-jan-2003
I recently found this fic buried in my bookmarks - I have
absolutely no memory of saving the site, let alone reading
the story. I've been denying myself a very good
fic.
A good chunk of my favorite stories involve plot where
some, if not all, of the pilots are very, very close friends. "Quote
Normal" is one of these fics. It starts with Quatre and
Duo as best friends - they are adults here, the war is
over and they've learned to depend on each other when life
gives them more than they can handle. Quatre is portrayed
a bit differently than he normally is - to me, he seems
more human here. He and Duo have decided to go to college,
and Quatre's making the most of the experience. That doesn't
mean drunken orgies, though he does become something of
a player (with a reason). It just means he's trying to
experience his life outside of being a Winner heir. He
just comes off as...strong. There are parts where he's
emotionally fragile, but...he's human. In other words,
he's no weepy, wispy Quatre, and I like that. Arsenic's
kept his empathic abilities, but they aren't taken too
far, and how the others deal with that is very, very sweet.
This story's main focus, however, is on Duo and Heero
and Heero's inability to suck it up and admit he needs
Duo. There's angsting, but it's adult, toned down, quiet,
thoughtful and at some points, quite deep. There's one
part, after a lemon scene, where Heero says something to
Duo that's just..really, really nice. And those
nice scenes are spread throughout the story.
I am doing a very poor job of describing this story, partly
because it's actually rather short (unfortunately), and
partly because I don't want to give away plot. The whole
thing just left me rather melancholy (in a good way), wishing
I had friends I was that close to.
Finally, don't let the 13xRelena pairing squick you. It's
understated and only briefly mentioned, and the two are
just as mature and loving as the pilots. And I'm fairly
certain I've never said that about that pairing
before.

"Eyes
of the Dragon" -added 11-nov-2001
Truthfully, anything by Ashkara is good. I
chose this one to rec though because of the creativity
of the storytelling. Wufei is an ancient dragon in
human guise following Duo around. He is infatuated
with Duo, and once they meet, Duo shares the sentiment
Rather hard to explain, but it's magical
and mythical and set in modern times. Very lovely. When
you're finished with this, go read her other stuff, particularly "Genesis".

Short but cute. Heero and Duo are
in a school, and Heero is narrating his observations of
Duo's tendency to destroy pen caps. He gets a bit
more than he bargains for, however, when Duo notices his
perusal.

The "Appearances" Series-
added 31-march-2002
2x3x2 is not generally a pairing I enjoy,
mainly because most fics I read just don't seem to pull
the pairing off convincingly. Trowa always seems to be
portrayed as so sexually/emotionally/physically abused
that he's an emotional eunuch, and Duo's the slutty babbler
who brings him out of his shell. However, there are always
exceptions, and Avarice is one. Her characterization of
the 2 pilots is wonderful - Trowa as quiet, serious, a
bit nervous in the company of others but still willing
to make an effort to be friendly to those he cares about,
and Duo is a mature young man who is remarkably talented
at reading others and seeing what needs to be done to make
them comfortable. However, he's still the jokester, still
laughing and having fun - he just knows when enough is
enough.
Right now in the series, it's just 2+3
- the stories out so far (the first two as of this writing)
involve the growth of their friendship and have nothing
to do with romance, though there's some definite admiring
of Trowa's form on Duo's part. I'm assuming it's
going to progress, however, as the ratings on the fics
when Avarice posts to the lists say 2x3.
I'm really enjoying this so far, and Avarice
has written 3 fics for the series, with more, hopefully,
to come.

"Morbid
Indeed" - added 02-feb-2002
First off, let me just assure those of
you who dislike deathfics that the dead person in question
dies before the fic takes place and the event isn't really
explored, so it's not really traumatic. There, now
that that's out of the way...
In this AU, Duo is a less-than-stellar
student in the worst school in the city. The recent
death of his best friend has not improved his attitude
in the least, and the fact that he believes his friend
was murdered and did not die accidentally, as everyone
else insists, does not help matters. After a particularly
nasty blowup between him and a teacher, he leaves school
and finds himself in a cemetery, where he meets up with
a mysterious stranger that will alter his life.
Aya had this as a PWP when she posted
to the lists, but I just couldn't put it in that category
- it had enough plot for me. Yeah, there's hot sex,
but there's a story there as well. She was threatened
by many people on the mailing lists with great bodily harm
if she doesn't continue this story in some way, which she
has agreed to do.
